Key to Indonesian Interfaith Dialogue
Key to Indonesian Interfaith Dialogue

Pope Francis’ visit to Indonesia from 3 to 6 September 2024 was a historic event that deserves international attention and celebration. As an Indonesian Muslim scholar, I am deeply encouraged by the Pope’s unwavering advocacy of interfaith dialogue as a crucial tool to counter extremism and radicalism. His visit to Indonesia falls within the framework of the necessary collaboration among different religions to counter the rise of fanaticism and build more inclusive societies.

In his recent speech in Jakarta, Francis highlighted the fundamental role of dialogue in fostering mutual understanding and peace among diverse religious communities.

Engaging in interfaith dialogue is not a mere formality. Once a person adopts interfaith dialogue as a concept in mind and in practice, the propensity for extremes begins to wane. When this happens, the foundation for peace and respect for others is laid; it fosters peace and tranquility in society and in the world.

The Pope's message resonates deeply with Indonesia's own journey toward harmony amid its rich religious diversity. This archipelago, with its majority Muslim population and significant Christian, Hindu, Buddhist and indigenous communities, faces unique challenges related to radicalism. But on the other hand, it serves as a model for how interfaith dialogue can mitigate sectarian tensions and foster a spirit of cooperation.

The Pope is not suggesting interfaith dialogue just as a theory, but as a real way to address radicalism. His emphasis on working together with different religious groups underscores the importance of collective action to advocate for understanding and tolerance.

The Pope's trip is of particular significance for Indonesia, where interfaith debates have helped to curb radicalism. Local efforts and various interfaith coalitions show the country's dedication to dialogue and collaboration. Francis' presence has reinforced and enhanced this commitment, providing both symbolic and practical support for current interfaith projects.

Furthermore, the Pope’s interest in communication coincides with the broader global trend towards intercultural and interreligious understanding. His visit highlights the importance of creating connections between communities rather than allowing divisions to fester. This method not only heals the signs of extremism, but also addresses its underlying reasons by fostering understanding and unity among different groups.

It is essential that all religious communities heed Pope Francis’ call for unity on the occasion of his visit and his support for interreligious dialogue. By working closely together, we can tackle the problem of extremism together and create communities based on mutual respect and cooperation. The Pope’s presence serves as a timely and optimistic affirmation that by engaging in conversation and working together, we have the ability to conquer the barriers that divide us and establish a world characterized by peace. His speeches in Jakarta strongly confirm the importance of authentic interaction between religious groups in promoting peace and understanding. Let us celebrate the Pope's visit and his message by taking the opportunity to strengthen our dedication to communication and to working together for a peaceful and just world.
