HMPS of Hadith Studies, Faculty of Ushuluddin UIN Jakarta Holds Studium Generale Featuring Lecture on Maqashid al-Sunnah by Qatari Fiqh Professor
Jakarta, FU Online News – The Student Association of the Hadith Studies Program (HMPS Ilmu Hadis), Faculty of Ushuluddin, UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta, successfully held a Studium Generale under the theme “Contextual Approach to Maqashid al-Sunnah in Hadith Studies.”
The event featured a distinguished speaker, Prof. Dr. Mohammed El Gammal, Professor of Fiqh at Hamad bin Khalifa University (HBKU), Qatar, who also serves as a Professor Fellow at UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta.
The Studium Generale took place on Monday, October 13, 2025, at 09.00 a.m. WIB in the Theater Room, 4th Floor, Faculty of Ushuluddin Building. The event was officially opened by Dr. Aktobi Ghozali, M.A., Vice Dean for Student Affairs and Cooperation of the Faculty of Ushuluddin.
In his opening remarks, Dr. Aktobi expressed his appreciation and hopes that the program would enrich students’ understanding, particularly in deepening the study of Hadith through a maqashidi approach. “We hope this activity serves as an initial bridge to strengthen academic collaboration between the Faculty of Ushuluddin and Hamad bin Khalifa University, Qatar,” he said.
The Head of HMPS Hadith Studies, Fathur Heriansyah, also expressed his gratitude for the successful event. He considered the presence of Prof. El Gammal a remarkable opportunity for students to learn directly from an internationally renowned scholar.
During his presentation, Prof. Dr. Mohammed El Gammal explained that Maqashid al-Sunnah aims to uncover the higher objectives of the Prophet’s teachings, which embody the spirit of liberation. “The purpose of Sunnah is to free people from all forms of bondage, wa yadha’u ‘anhum israhum wa al-aghlal (Qur’an, Al-A’raf [7]:157),” he emphasized.
He illustrated how pre-Islamic traditions often restricted people’s rational freedom—for instance, the custom of seeking permission from so-called wise figures or choosing specific days before doing business. “This is what Sharia seeks—to liberate human beings from irrational constraints,” he affirmed.
The session continued with an interactive question-and-answer segment, where most participants were students of the Faculty of Ushuluddin, especially from the Hadith Studies Program. One of the notable questions raised concerned scholarship opportunities in Qatar. In response, Prof. El Gammal encouraged students to pursue such opportunities, emphasizing the importance of language proficiency, both in Arabic and English, with a minimum IELTS score of 6.5.
At the end of the program, Prof. El Gammal expressed his appreciation to the Faculty of Ushuluddin and its students. Although some were initially shy to ask questions, he praised their good command of Arabic, as evidenced by their understanding of the material delivered entirely in Arabic. “Despite their modesty, I see great potential in the students of Ushuluddin,” he concluded.
