Faculty of Ushuluddin, UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta Holds Hearing and Socialization on Research Ethics Committee

Jakarta, FU Online News — The Faculty of Ushuluddin, UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta, held a hearing and socialization session on the Research Ethics Committee in the 4th Floor Meeting Room. The event took place on July 14, 2025, from 14:00 to 15:00 WIB and was attended by the Dean, Vice Deans, Heads and Secretaries of Undergraduate and Master’s Programs, Head of Administration, as well as faculty members.

The session was officially opened by the Dean of the Faculty of Ushuluddin, Prof. Ismatu Ropi, M.A., Ph.D., who emphasized in his opening remarks the importance of deep understanding regarding the principles and procedures of research ethics within an academic setting. He highlighted that ethical compliance in research is not merely an administrative requirement but a vital part of academic commitment to scientific integrity.

The presentation was delivered by speakers from the Research Ethics Committee under the Institute for Research and Community Service (LP2M), namely Prof. Irma Nurbaeti S.Kp., M.Kes., Sp.Mat., Ph.D. (Faculty of Health Sciences) and Ms. Mutiara, Head of the Research Cluster. Topics covered included:

  • The role and position of the Research Ethics Committee under LP2M

  • Moral and ethical principles in research, based on national and international standards

  • The importance of ethical approval, especially in research involving human subjects, sensitive data, and methodologies with direct impact on participants

  • Procedures for ethical submission, including required documents, application flow, process duration, and evaluation mechanisms

  • Academic and scientific responsibilities of researchers, both faculty and students

  • Emphasis on applying ethics in both qualitative and quantitative research

  • Legal and academic implications of conducting research without ethical approval

  • Mechanisms for ethical review, including Full Board Meetings and Ethics Clearance, as part of strengthening research governance

During the discussion session, participants raised several questions and inputs regarding topics such as ethical submission procedures for final-year students, the obligation of ethical approval for various types of research, challenges in student outreach, and limited access to research documents within the faculty.

In response, the Ethics Committee clarified that ethical approval is mandatory for research involving human aspects or sensitive information. Study programs are expected to actively assist students in the application process. Additionally, LP2M will provide written guidelines and organize technical training sessions to support implementation at the faculty level. The committee also announced plans to hold follow-up meetings and training for the Medical Research Committee.

The event concluded with an expression of appreciation from the faculty for the speakers’ contributions and the active participation of all attendees. The Faculty of Ushuluddin reaffirmed its commitment to follow up on this initiative by drafting internal Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to strengthen the implementation of research ethics at both the program and faculty levels in a sustainable manner.
